2008 Big Sur Artist in Residence Program:
A Program of the Big Sur Arts Initiative and The Big Sur Land Trust
The Big Sur Arts Initiative and The Big Sur Land Trust are dedicated to advancing the work of professional artists in California, and have collaborated to create an Artist in Residence program in Big Sur at Glen Deven Ranch. The vision of the program is to support professional artists with intensive studio time and a small stipend in a quiet and beautiful location, with the purpose of:
- supporting a California artist with time, space and the inspiration of Big Sur to develop a body of work, and
- bringing creative vitality to Monterey County and specifically the community of Big Sur.
The 2008 Artist-in-Residence program will grant one professional artist an eight-week residency with free housing in a private artist studio and a $3000 stipend. The program is designed to support emerging or mid-career visual artists who are seeking an opportunity such as this to substantially boost their career and who are attracted to work in nature and in Big Sur.
The selected artist will meet all of the following criteria:
- Is a professional artist working in the visual arts. Artists’ media may include painting, drawing, digital art, mixed media or photography, so long as the constraints of the studio space are appropriate for the materials, style and size of the work (see application for details about the Artist Studio.)
- Lives and works in California, outside of Monterey County.
- Will attend an opening reception at the beginning of the residency, as well as two closing residency community events, at which time artwork produced during the residency will be displayed.
- Is able to communicate fluently in English (bilingual artists encouraged to apply.)
The 2008 Artist-in-Residence begins on September 29th and concludes November 21st. Due to a two week office closure as a result of the Basin Complex Fire, the application deadline has been extended to JULY 25.
Why Not Monterey County?
The Big Sur Arts Initiative and The Big Sur Land Trust are not accepting applications from Monterey County artists for this artist residency for two primary reasons. In an effort to support Monterey County artists specifically, another artist in residence program is being developed for 2009 that will be exclusive to local artists and will be designed to support the needs of an artist already living in the area. As such, this residency offers an opportunity to inspire the creative talent of an artist living outside the area as well as bring inspiration to the area for the local students, artists, patrons and greater community to enjoy.
